eAMBULANCE

Industry62 has made consistent work on making digital healthcare solutions in Estonia. eAmbulance is a service that can save lives in a time-critical situation. eAmbulance allows emergency personnel to access patients’ medical records and makes the emergency reporting more efficient.

Understanding the pain points to design a better process

When digitalizing any services it’s important to understand and emphasize the pain points of the end-users and other people involved. With focus on end-users, it’s possible to make overall process significantly better and simpler than before. So this case was not just about making digital solution. We doubled our efforts to streamline the emergency process as well. Especially in the situation, where there is no time to waste and lives at stake, this was paramount.

Ambulance problems

The big problem is that emergency personnel don’t know the background of the patients, when they come to the scene of the accident. What is patients’ medical history, does he/she have medication for example, or a pacemaker in chest or some kind of ailment that affects the treatment. Is there known time-critical information available?

Another problem are the call reports, which are situation summary documents for all medical personnel. Before eAmbulance call reports were written by ambulance personnel on paper. The hospital don’t have the call report in advance and have to collect it from ambulance crew when patient arrives. Call reports are later written with computer, which is double work for medical personnel.

Saving lives with the data

eAmbulance allows emergency personnel to access patients’ medical records and makes the emergency reporting more efficient.

eAmbulance is keyed to X-Road, which is an authentication method to Estonian Health Information System (HIS). Idea is that different eHealth services are connected to one big data pool, where the basic information, medical history and population register data of all Estonian citizens are collected. Different digital solutions and medical personnel can connect to this data and fetch data from there and push data in.

The new enhanced eAmbulance emergency process

  1. The process starts from call to Emergency Call Center (112)

  2. Ambulance doctor enters emergency case data during emergency treatment using eAmbulance Mobile Workstation (iPad)

  3. Doctor can enquire online time-critical data of the patient and past medical history from HIS on-site. From HIS the doctor gets prefilled ambulance card with the patient’s information

  4. Doctor sends Emergency visit summary (call reports) to HIS with completed ambulance card

  5. Patient arrives to hospital, hospital can enquire these documents from HIS beforehand
